When I started NourishWell, aka/ Better Health Now, in 2014, just before I went to the Institute for Integrated Nutrition [IIN], I envisioned it as a public journal; I used this space to hold myself accountable because maximizing physical and mental health can only come from our consciousness and awareness of what is beneficial to better health. I had a few struggles in life, physical and mental. After taking a course with The Institute of Integrated Nutrition, I started seeing the world of nutrition and food through the eyes of holistic health and how it was different from the views of big food corporations, the FDA, USDA, and allopathic medical doctors. I saw that omitting vital nutrition from our foods was hindering the lives of so many people. I extended my educational path with a B.S. in Community Health Education and a Master’s in Public Health, I believe that with this education, I can and will be a catalyst for change and bring light and understanding that an organic plant-based food lifestyle or a 90% plant-based food lifestyle will not only change our trajectory of health but omit many of our needs, [if not all] for allopathic medicine.  The philosophy of holistic nutrition is that one’s health expresses the complex interplay between the physical, chemical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and environmental aspects of one’s life and well-being. As such, holistic nutritional professionals are trained in the holistic dietary approach to health and healing from a whole-person perspective. Using nutritional education as a primary tool, holistic nutritional professionals emphasize health by approaching each person as unique.

I am constantly overwhelmed by the encouragement and feedback I receive from readers. Guiding others along their wellness journey is my passion, and I thank all of you for your continued support.

WHY NUTRITION IS IMPORTANT

The Back Story

In any country, community, tribe, neighborhood, or society, the health and well-being of mothers, infants, and children should be a significant public health priority. With that in mind, the health of our present population determines the health of the next generation, and this can predict future public health challenges for families, communities, and a country’s health care system. In most underdeveloped countries, we see malnutrition due to vital mineral and vitamin deficiencies; this is a primary health concern for everyone, especially children and expecting mothers. A significant and essential aspect, I feel and believe, is better access to quality healthcare services; in the U.S., we have many resources available to us, the best doctors, surgeons, medical facilities, and advancements in technology, and yet we have one of the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, strokes, and cardiovascular disease, more so than other countries and even more so then underserved countries. When the body lacks nutrients, we tend to crave, and when we crave, we eat gluttonously, filling up with carbs and sugar and omitting what the body needs: vitamins and essential minerals. Most birth defects are mineral deficiencies, and most low birth weights in babies are nutrient deficiencies. Understanding how micro and macro-nutrients support maternal homeostasis and prevent cretinism and neuro-tube defects while promoting proper fetal growth should be the most crucial conversation an expecting mother should have with her OB-GYN. Our food should encourage and support healthy babies, families, and communities. Our present healthcare facilities are missing that conversation with their patients.

The art of healing comes from nature, not from the physician. Therefore, the physician must start from nature with an open mind.
-Paracelsus

Two-time Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling said, “You can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency.”

Private Health Coaching

Program Outlines: Initiation Session

When you sign up for the Initiation Session, you’ll get two private, one-hour sessions with a  Certified Nutritional Health Coach to discuss your wellness habits and goals. After the appointment, you’ll complete a few brief surveys to establish your current lifestyle and needs. In your two sessions, I will work with you to discover how you can make lasting change.

6-Month Initiative

Every other week for six months, I will meet with you for an hour to work through your wellness habits, challenges, and goals. By tracking changes in nutrition, meditation, and lifestyle over several months, I will be best able to develop a custom, holistic approach to forming lasting habits and learning mechanisms for your life. When you sign up for this program, you’ll get seven days a week of contact with me [your coach] to reach out with questions about supermarket shopping, food choices, supplements, or any other questions between sessions. This is the most intensive, and by far most rewarding, of the programs offered. You may decide that this level of support and accountability is right to continue again and again.

Post-Program

After completing the 6-Month Program, you are encouraged to sign up for another 3-Month Program until you feel comfortable with accountability. The post-program is a simple way to maintain your newly improved lifestyle habits. You must complete at least one 6-month Program to be considered for the post-program. You will meet with your health coach for one hour during this once-a-month session. You’ll review any discoveries or challenges and discuss the best ways to adjust as you progress through life.

Community Health

Community health is a branch of public health focused on the health and well-being of specific populations or communities. It emphasizes the following key aspects:

  1. Health Promotion and Education: Community health initiatives often include programs that educate individuals about healthy practices, disease prevention, and lifestyle choices.

  2. Access to Healthcare Services: Ensuring that community members have access to essential health services, including primary care, mental health services, and preventive care.

  3. Epidemiology: Monitoring health trends and disease outbreaks within the community to identify health issues and develop appropriate interventions.

  4. Social Determinants of Health: Addressing factors such as socioeconomic status, education, and environmental conditions that affect health outcomes.

  5. Community Engagement: Involving community members in health decision-making processes to tailor programs and interventions to their specific needs.

  6. Collaboration with Local Organizations: Partnering with schools, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies to create comprehensive health strategies.

  7. Policy Advocacy: Advocating for policies that promote public health and address health disparities within the community.

By focusing on these areas, community health aims to improve the overall health and quality of life for individuals within a community.

Community Approach

Health education is a comprehensive approach that combines learning experiences to help individuals and communities improve environmental health literacy. Its primary goal is to increase awareness of local environmental conditions, potential exposures, and the impacts of these exposures on individual and public health. Health education also equips community members to better understand and interpret public health work findings. By developing and implementing strategies to enhance the health of individuals and communities, health education includes programs that help communities achieve their health goals by providing trusted, science-based information, positive encouragement, and motivation. Health Coaches/Community Health Educators play a crucial role in this process. They help clients transform their lives by focusing on epigenetics to improve physical and mental health through coaching. This approach creates individualized solutions that support genuine and lasting lifestyle changes, going beyond just understanding the science behind nutrition and exercise to motivate clients and communities to live happier and healthier lives.

More importantly, Health Coaches take a Holistic approach to health, not just on food but also in all the other areas of life that can support and nourish your overall body, such as careers, spirituality, relationships, and environment.

My Mission is to Educate

Evidence shows that the same diet that is good for cancer prevention is also suitable for heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cataracts, macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s cognitive dysfunction, MS, osteoporosis, and other diseases. These diseases are influenced by mineral deficiency due to a poor, toxic Western diet called the Standard American Diet (SAD). Conversely, a Whole Foods plant-based diet can counteract these diseases.

In addition, you need vital supplemental nutrients. The supplement I use has created optimum health in my life.

Social Determinants of Health

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Social determinants of health (SDOH) result from Children born into poverty, early childhood illness and malnutrition, and lack of education and resources, which leads to limited job skills and underemployment.

SDOH is shaped by the distribution of money, power, and resources throughout local communities, nations, and the world. Differences in these conditions lead to health inequities or unfair and avoidable differences in health status within and between countries.

Family Nutrition/Gut Health/Mental Health

Those living in food-insecure households consume fewer servings of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and more sugar, fat, and salt. These dietary shortfalls are linked to chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
